MIT community members, please note that limited parking will be available to guests attending the 2018 Commencement festivities. We appreciate your understanding as we welcome the families and friends of our graduates to campus. Parking, security arrangements, and other access changes that will affect the campus community will be noted on this page.

Road closures from 9:30-10:45 am on MIT Commencement Day are typically as described below:
- Massachusetts Ave from Vassar Street to Memorial Drive closed to both Boston and Cambridge-bound traffic
- Amherst Street (west of Massachusetts Ave) closed both directions
- Amherst Street (east of Ames Street) closed both directions
- Wadsworth Street closed both directions
- Memorial Drive westbound from Ames Street to Massachusetts Ave
Please note that on Thursday, June 7, and Friday, June 8, the following parking restrictions will be in place as MIT welcomes family and friends for the MIT Hooding and Commencement ceremonies. We encourage all parkers, especially those with North Area and Kresge permits, to seek alternate commuting methods on these days to assist us in accommodating guests.
Kresge Lot restrictions: Thursday, June 7, and Friday, June 8
On Thursday and Friday, Kresge Lot will be reserved for guests with state-issued disability parking placards only. All parkers with Kresge permits will need to seek alternate commuting methods or use one of the alternate lots listed below. Kresge permits will be configured to provide access to these alternate lots on Thursday and Friday.
Albany Garage restrictions: Friday, June 8
On Friday, June 8, the Albany Garage will be reserved for Commencement guest parking. Parkers with North Area permits who use the Albany Garage will need to seek alternate commuting methods or use one of the alternate lots noted below.
The following lots will be available for MIT employees and volunteers impacted by these restrictions who need to drive to campus on Thursday and Friday:
On Friday only, alternate parking will also be available at Stata Garage using the Attendant Assist program to direct parkers to aisle parking as needed.
- MIT Medical will be open during regular business hours on Friday
- Parking for those coming to MIT Medical will be in the Ford Lot at 400 Main Street
- Signs will provide directional assistance between MIT Medical and the Ford Parking Lot
On June 8, the Tech Shuttle is scheduled to follow the morning route incorporating the changes made in Kendall Square, with additional stops at Kendall Square MBTA stop, Wadsworth and Amherst Streets, and Amherst and Carleton Streets. This route will run from 6:15AM-930AM, and again from 10:45AM-7:10PM. The Shuttle will return to its current route on Monday, June 11.
During Commencement, from 9:30AM-10:45AM, the Tech Shuttle will run a modified route along Vassar Street. Stops 2-6 will not be serviced during this time. Please see the map for more details.
SafeRide Shuttle changes for Commencement
The SafeRide Shuttle program is available evenings starting at 6 PM and shifts into an OnDemand mode at 11 PM each night. During Commencement for the 11 PM – 1 AM time period, the MIT Parking and Transportation Office will extend service for two fixed-route SafeRide Shuttles: the Boston East and Campus Shuttle routes. The OnDemand shuttles will also continue to operate during their normal hours of 11 PM – 3:30 AM. This extension of the two fixed-route shuttles will be in place to accommodate those in attendance.
Please note that this schedule will be in place on June 7 through June 9 only and the regular SafeRide schedule will resume on June 10.
SafeRide Shuttle schedule for Commencement
Shuttles circulate to assigned stops on a predetermined schedule
- Campus route, 6PM – 1AM (route map)
- Boston East route, 6PM – 1AM (route map)
- Cambridge East & Somerville route, 6PM – 11PM (route map)
- Cambridge West & Brookline route, 6PM – 11PM (route map)
Riders use app or online service to request pick up and drop off within the zone
- OnDemand shuttles will run their normal schedule from 11 PM – 3:30 AM (zone map)
- To use the SafeRide OnDemand shuttle, riders use the TransLōc Rider mobile application or online service.

EZ Ride changes for Commencement
On Friday, June 8, all EZ Ride service will be free for the day. An additional stop will be added to the morning and mid-day schedule along Memorial Drive to let passengers access Killian Court directly, except from 9:30AM–10:45AM.
A detour is scheduled during the Commencement ceremony from 9:30AM-10:45AM which will bypass stops I-K on the morning EZ Ride route. This detour will follow a modified route along Vassar Street.

To ease traffic concerns, delivery trucks will have no access to certain areas of campus and restricted access to the remainder of the campus on Commencement Day. MIT will communicate this to its preferred vendors and to other vendors that routinely deliver to campus. Members of the MIT community are asked to plan accordingly.
