Welcome, MIT community members! Please see the Schedule page for an overview of the festivities.

We recommend that community members remain alert to the campus changes information for updates about parking, garage and road closures, and building access issues during Commencement week.

We would never be able to pull off beautiful graduation ceremonies without the help of the MIT community—and we have opportunities to contribute every year! Potential event staff should note that the MIT senior administration both supports and encourages staff participation in Commencement and that your supervisor can answer payroll-related questions. Each year, hundreds of staff and students contribute their time to make these special occasions great for the graduates and their families. Thank you! It makes all the difference.

Commencement event staff

We appreciate your interest in working with us during Commencement week! The engagement of MIT staff and students is vital to the ceremonies’ success. We give directions, answer questions, make conversation with guests, and help them solve problems. Registration is now open—welcome to the team!

When MIT announced an in-person Commencement celebration last December, we noted that we would be carefully monitoring Covid-19 to assess whether any significant shifts in the public health landscape should prompt changes to our policies or plans.

While cases on MIT’s campus are currently decreasing, they are rising across the country and in Massachusetts. For these reasons, we strongly encourage graduates and guests to take precautions before Commencement ceremonies.

To help stop the spread of Covid-19, everyone can test before traveling and they can wear a high-quality mask while traveling and/or indoors. Consistent with these safeguards, MIT is strongly encouraging all MIT graduates and their guests—as well as ceremony participants, staff, and faculty—to wear high-quality masks during indoor Commencement ceremonies. The Institute will make face coverings available for free at all Commencement events.

The Institute expects that Commencement attendees who are eligible to be vaccinated will be up-to-date on their Covid vaccinations or have a medical or religious reason why they cannot receive the vaccine. We strongly encourage attendees who are unvaccinated or who have concerns to wear a well-fitting mask at all Commencement events.

We will continue to closely monitor the Covid-19 situation, and keep you updated about any changes to our policies or plans. Full information about MIT policy in regard to Covid-19 is available at MIT Now.

To accommodate upcoming commencement celebrations, please note the following activities in Briggs Field and Westgate Lot.

Between May 12 and June 6, Riverside account holders will have “all lots” access to MIT parking lots. “All lots” access does not include Childcare lots, the Ford (E19) Lot, or the MIT Medical lot, and does not include Reserved, Electric Vehicle, and HP spaces (marked with signs).

Briggs Field commencement tent construction: May 12 – June 6
Tent construction for upcoming commencement events is scheduled to begin on Thursday, May 12, in Briggs Field. Anticipated hours are 7AM-7PM daily. Some noise from generators, trucks, and backup alarms is expected, with noisier work occurring after 9AM. The area to the west and south of the baseball diamonds will be fenced off to house several tents and the commencement stage. The tents and fencing will be removed after Commencement through June 6.

Westgate Lot temporary closures
From Thursday, May 12, through Wednesday, May 18, a reduced number of parking spaces will be available in the Westgate Lot as crews prepare Briggs Field for Commencement. The work areas will be cordoned off and account holders will be notified to move their vehicles accordingly.

From May 18 – June 1, Westgate Lot will temporarily close to account holders while the area is used as a commencement staging area. All cars must be removed from the area by 7PM on Wednesday, May 18. Riverside parking account holders will be contacted by the Parking & Transportation Office separately to address alternate parking accommodations.

In early June, the Westgate Lot will reopen with reduced capacity as the commencement tents are removed from Briggs Field. The Westgate Lot will return to full capacity on Tuesday, June 7.
